# Accounts

> Why Recontrol sorts everything into four classes, and what each one means.

Everything you track has a balance, and it changes only when a transaction touches it. A hand-kept account's balance is the sum of its history; a connected one shows what its bank reports.

![Household's Assets on the web: their total over six months, where they're held, and each account's balance, with the four classes in the sidebar.](https://mintcdn.com/recontrol/sM_LewCYsSNmvpyF/images/screens/assets-light.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=sM_LewCYsSNmvpyF\&q=85\&s=ad342f2b9299ef781c6cc09143ebd3dd)

| Class | Is | Examples |
| - | - | - |
| **Assets** | What you **have** | Checking, cash, a fixed deposit, a brokerage account |
| **Liabilities** | What you **owe** | A credit card, a home loan |
| **Income Sources** | Where money **comes from** | Salary, freelance clients, interest |
| **Expenses** | Where money **goes** | Groceries, rent, eating out |

Assets and liabilities are **positions**: what stands at a moment. Income sources and expenses are **activity**: what passed over a period. Each class is read on its own, never netted into one figure.

"Account" means an asset or a liability. An expense is a **category** and an income item a **source**; they hold no money, only count what passes through.

A side you leave blank isn't named: the transaction shows only the side you did name, and keeps the books balanced until you [sort it](https://recontrol.money/docs/tasks/sort-what-synced.md).
