A transaction is how you record that money moved. In Recontrol, every transaction captures both sides of the movement: the account money left (the from account) and the account money entered (the to account). This is the foundation of double-entry bookkeeping — and why your balances are always accurate.

What a transaction records

Common transaction patterns

Paying for groceries with a debit card Money leaves your bank account (asset) and enters your groceries category (expense).
  • From: Current Account → To: Groceries
Receiving your salary Money leaves your salary source (income) and enters your bank account (asset).
  • From: Salary → To: Current Account
Transferring between accounts Money moves from one asset to another — withdrawing cash, or moving between bank accounts.
  • From: Savings Account → To: Cash Wallet
Paying a credit card bill Money leaves your bank account (asset) and reduces your credit card balance (liability).
  • From: Current Account → To: Credit Card

Timestamp vs. entry time

The timestamp on a transaction is the date and time the financial event happened — not when you added it to Recontrol. This matters because balance history is calculated based on the transaction timestamp. If you forgot to record a transaction from last week, you can back-date it and the historical balances will be correctly updated.

Editing and deleting transactions

  • Edit a transaction’s amount, accounts, timestamp, or description at any time. Balance records for all affected accounts are automatically updated.
  • Delete a transaction to fully reverse its effect on all balances. This cannot be undone.

Adjustment transactions

When you set an opening balance on an account, Recontrol automatically creates an adjustment transaction to initialise the balance. These are clearly labelled and work like any other transaction.

Relationships

  • Every transaction belongs to exactly one Space.
  • Transactions reference exactly two Accounts: a from account and a to account.
  • Transactions drive Insights — each transaction updates the balance history for both accounts it touches.
