Account types
Recontrol organises accounts into four types that mirror standard accounting categories:Asset
Something you own. Cash, bank savings, investments, a vehicle, property. The value belongs to you.Examples: Current account, savings account, cash wallet, fixed deposit.
Liability
Something you owe. Credit card balances, personal loans, home loans. The value is debt.Examples: Credit card, bank loan, money owed to a friend.
Expense
A spending category. Money flows into expense accounts when you spend. Tracking these lets you see where your money goes.Examples: Groceries, rent, utilities, dining out, fuel.
Income
A source of money. Money flows from income accounts into your assets when you earn. Tracking these lets you see where your money comes from.Examples: Salary, freelance income, rental income, interest.
Every space also has an Unspecified account created automatically. It absorbs one side of a transaction when only one account is relevant — for example, recording a salary deposit without specifying an income source.
Opening balances
When you create an account that already has an existing balance — such as a bank account you are adding to Recontrol for the first time — you can set an opening balance. Recontrol automatically creates an adjustment transaction behind the scenes to bring the account to that starting balance, keeping the ledger consistent from day one.Balance history
Every transaction you record updates the affected accounts’ balances. Because Recontrol uses double-entry bookkeeping, you can look up the balance of any account at any point in time with mathematical certainty — not a calculated estimate, but an exact figure derived from the complete transaction history. Use the Insights feature to chart balance history over time and compute totals across account groups.Managing accounts
- Create an account from the Accounts tab. Choose a name, type, and optional opening balance.
- Edit an account’s name at any time. The type cannot be changed after creation.
- Delete an account only when it has no transactions linked to it.
Relationships
- Every account belongs to exactly one Space.
- Accounts are referenced by Transactions as the source (
from) and destination (to). - Accounts accumulate Insights (balance snapshots per date) as transactions are added.
