A space is the top-level container for all financial activity in Recontrol. Every account, transaction, and balance record belongs to exactly one space. Spaces provide complete isolation — data in one space is entirely separate from data in any other.
Personal space
When you sign up, Recontrol creates a Personal space for you automatically. This is your default workspace. You can begin adding accounts and recording transactions immediately.
Your Personal space cannot be deleted. It is yours alone — no one else can be invited to it unless you explicitly create a shared space for that purpose.
Shared spaces
You can create additional spaces and invite other people to join them. Shared spaces are designed for:
- Households — track joint expenses and shared accounts together
- Partnerships — manage finances for a business or project with co-founders
- Groups — split and track expenses with flatmates, travel companions, or teams
Every member of a shared space can see and interact with the space’s data according to the role and permissions they have been assigned.
Space isolation
Spaces are fully isolated from each other:
- An account in Space A is invisible to members of Space B (unless someone is a member of both).
- A user’s access level in one space says nothing about their access in another space.
- Roles and permissions are always space-scoped — they apply only within the space they were defined.
This makes it safe to manage a personal space and a shared household space from the same account, with no data leaking between them.
Creating and managing spaces
- Create a new space from the Settings tab. You are automatically assigned the admin role.
- Invite people to a space using their email address or phone number. See Collaboration.
- Delete a space only if you are its admin and it is not your default Personal space. Deleting a space permanently removes all accounts and transactions within it.
Deleting a space is permanent and irreversible. All accounts, transactions, and balance history within that space are deleted immediately and cannot be recovered.
Relationships
- A space is created by one user (the owner), who is automatically an admin.
- A space has many Accounts, including one automatically-created Unspecified account.
- A space has many Transactions.
- A space has many Memberships — the users who belong to it and their roles.
- A space has many pending Invites — people who have been invited but have not yet joined.
